Cold Weather Has Helped Blueberry Crops

The cold weather devastated orange crops in Southwest Florida, but the chilly temperatures have been good news for blueberry farmers.

The Bee Branch Berry Farm in LaBelle has seen their crops thrive because of the cold. The blueberries aren't ripe yet because it's still early in the season, but owner Lee Cobb says he's expecting to see anywhere between a 30 to 35-percent increase in his crop from last year. "We're expecting about 15,000 flats this year. That would be around 50,000 to 60,000 pounds," he said.

The cold weather is not all good news for the berry farm, though. The weather helped with the blueberry's hibernation process. But now that they're in bloom, the young blueberries need to stay warm. Cobb says he'll be keeping an eye on the plants with the colder weather coming back into the area.
