Big chill on the way to Tampa Bay area tonight

TAMPA - The NWS has a freeze warning running from Citrus County south through the middle of the state including Hillsborough and into the vegetable growing region south of Lake Okeechobee.

The warning does not cover Pinellas, Sarasota or Charlotte counties.

The weather service says the calm air and clear skies will create ideal conditions for temperatures to drop after sunset.

Forecasters expect freezing temperatures to cover most of Hillsborough except around Tampa, though it could be close to freezing east of Interstate 275.

Strawberry areas around Plant City could see temperatures drop into the high 20s with the same for most of Pasco County.

Hernando County could fall to the low 20s.

Temperatures around Hillsborough should hit freezing about 3 a.m. and stay below 32 until about an hour after dawn.

For counties to the north, freezing temperatures could hit about midnight and stay below freezing until after 8 a.m.

The weather service says there should be just enough breeze through the night to keep temperatures from falling more.

Wind mixes slightly warmer air above the ground and can keep temperatures slightly warmer.

If the wind calms during the night, temperatures could drop 7 degrees more than forecast and put eastern Hillsborough into the low 20s.
